Sarasota County was created in 1921. It was named for a word in the
indigenous Calusa language, whose meaning may mean point of rocks.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of
1,878 km˛ (725 mi˛). 1,480 km˛ (572 mi˛) of it is land and 398 km˛
(154 mi˛) of it (21.19%) is water. Sarasota County is part of the
Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area.
